Yes, this is a great idea for stuff you don't need to get out that often! I have several shelves that have things like this on them - spare electronics parts and art supplies, that sort of thing. It doesn't work for clothes, sadly - we actually kind of tried that. Although I do have some big shallow boxes/box lids - trays kind of - with the clothes stacked in them on the shelves for clothes.
