2019 in review

cimoreneI wasn't going to do this at first, because I was like, Obviously it's terrible, let's just forget it. But then I realized that this kind of post is useful to Future Me who is trying to remember when different things happened exactly, so here you go, Future Me:
New to Me: We bought a house in June and I started studying Welsh in December with my sister.
Births, Deaths, Marriages: My mother-in-law died of cancer, very suddenly - with less than a week's notice, right after co-purchasing a house with us and going into debt, and without life insurance.
Personal Achievements: mostly managing to keep various things organized through an increasingly complex series of lists, but also getting into drawing again and doing lots of practice
Biggest Fail: This whole buying a house venture, really. Wax signed for the mortgage and loans along with her much more financially-stable mother, but since nobody was in ill health it didn't seem urgent to make contingency plans or buy life insurance yet. Fail. Also when they first inspected the house they said ultimately the septic tank and all the drains would have to be redone which would be expensive and time-consuming but he couldn't promise the plumbing would work through the winter without doing it - but agreed to start installing the new plumbing instead of starting by ripping out all the old drains and stuff, which would've delayed when we could move in and had everybody paying multiple rents or whatever which we thought was needlessly expensive. However, a pipe exploded and the basement flooded and the hot water heater was destroyed, and because the drains hadn't been fixed first the insurances both don't want to pay out, so... fail, on both the plumber's part and ours.
Illnesses: Well, MIL died of cancer that nobody knew she had, and by the time they found it she couldn't survive another week. Snookums was diagnosed with feline diabetes in March and he's been getting insulin injections every twelve hours, plus the so-called Catkins (as close to 0 carb as possible) diet. He's doing pretty okay though, and the vet's even reduced his initial dose. The BB was diagnosed with kidney disease in June and she has to have a different special diet, but she, too, seems to be doing okay. All the stress has driven both Wax and me to the brink of nervous breakdown, and in Wax's case back to a doctor to get some medication for panic attacks.
Most Excitment: Before the basement flooded, the whole buying and renovating a house project was delightful and we were having a great time. There's new kitchen cabinets and paint and wallpaper and plans galore around here.
Favorite TV show: Derry Girls was the most enjoyable show that was new to me in 2019. But maybe Schitt's Creek was my favorite?
Favorite Film: Tough to choose between The Handmaiden and My Cousin Vinny, so I'll call that a tie.

Fannish Interests:
- Good Omens. I've been nearly monofannish since June. This isn't exactly new, but the book fandom was definitely in hibernation until the miniseries came out.
- It (Stephen King) - I've read quite a bit of this to fill in the gaps as the supply of #1 has slackened off a bit from the high point in August or September. Still no intention of reading the book though!
- Uh... parrots? I fell down a YouTube spiral. Listen, parrots are amazing and some of them talk, and parrots who talk are hilarious.
- Commedia dell'arte. It started with a random reference in Agatha Christie and now I'm shipping Harlequin/Pierrot. Ask me anything about this at your peril.
- Not exactly fannish, but... I have a recent interest in watching birds at the birdfeeder through the window. They've been something to cling to since October.
