new work practice
14 May 2021 04:31 pmNew work practice, at a local store this time. We had tons of leftover time after the meeting with my career counselor so he offered to go there with me to use up the rest of the time, but it actually took very little. The manager was in and my counselor had worked with him before. He was positive about my attitude, language skills, and the interest shown by having done a period at a furniture store as well and he agreed pretty much on the spot to a three months' practice.
There are 2 local discount department stores that are not EXACTLY like Wal-Mart or Target but sort of vaguely like them (without fresh food, but they sell packaged food), and this is the larger one, about fifteen minutes' walk from home. (The other is a block away so it's like three minutes - we would have tried both but the bigger one was on the way to the smaller one, and the conversation went well so I decided to agree on the spot. I had kind of preferred it before just because it's bigger anyway. And also the layout isn't as confusing inside.)
I'm pretty happy with this, and my counselor and I agreed on three days a week to start after how tired I was at the last place. There are a lot of different areas here so a lot to learn and low probability of boredom I think, plus a pretty large warehouse, a bunch of workers on at all times due to the size - much bigger than the furniture store. And the manager is experienced and so valued by the chain (a Finnish chain, which is another plus) that they've moved him to managing five different branches in his time there, so I'm guessing there won't be any of those new-manager sort of wrinkles we had at the last place. I am a BIT apprehensive about having to actively work to be outgoing enough to ask all the questions I think of. But I always THINK of plenty of questions, so if I just strictly force myself to not be shy about them perhaps that will be good enough. I'll be starting the first week of June.
