I have seen that method talked about, with charcoal! A lot of people also use that as one element in a mixture that also includes some bark or sphagnum moss, depending on the ambient temperature and humidity. The medium around the roots can apparently help compensate if it's very cold or very dry, but that wouldn't be an issue where you are!
