cimorene: An art nouveau floral wallpaper in greens and blues (wild)

This is Sue Storm the Oncidium orchid. (Oncidiums are also known as butterfly orchids, so I was gonna name her for the Hyalophora cecropia moth; but as Wax pointed out, that doesn't really roll off the tongue, so I picked the Invisible Woman because hyalo- means glass.)

As you can see, she's been potted in a little plastic cup that cherry tomatoes came in, because she arrived in a 9 cm (3.5") pot and there aren't any transparent planting pots that small being sold in Finland. I tried making ventilation holes with a hot glue gun as one site suggested, but it didn't work, so I switched to a big nail held in a pair of pliers, heated in a candle flame.

She lost more roots than the other guys, and cleaning them was a huge pain because they're more like angelhair pasta than fat shoestrings. However, she still had some new growth and healthy roots, so I hope she will recover. Most of this cup is full of potting mix, so we gave her this bamboo chopstick for support.
