I'm trying to read the Silmarillion again! This might be the third time.

This time I made it through the creation story bit, and I still thought the musical element came out weird and naff and didn't really work.

I'm enjoying the elf parts, which, while boring at times, are mainly like reading an encyclopedia. At times it reminds me of Edith Hamilton's Mythology, one of my favorite books in elementary school. But at others it's hilariously even less narrative (or more so, but the narrative is too boring and has too many names to keep track of and I lose the thread, so in that sense, a bit like an Icelandic saga... albeit their polar opposite in level of detail).

I read it when it was published!

I do not recommend trying to read it in one sitting like a regular book. Read a chapter and then take a break!

The family trees in the back were essential for me to keep everyone straight.

Hope you find some of it enjoyable.

If you haven't heard 'I Fell Asleep (Reading the Silmarillion)' (Spotify link), it's very cute.

Yeah, the Silm basically is supposed to be their Bullfinch or Hamilton, or even more like their Bible, straight up, with a huuuuuuge dose of the Anglo-Saxon chronicle! Like, in-universe.

Heh! I love the Silm and have read it multiple times, but I'll be the first to admit that I bounced off it on my first attempt, and the absolute hailstorm of similar-sounding names for different people - interspersed with different-sounding names that are actually the same person - was part of that. :D

You do you!

I just think, for me, it's very wearying to try to read The Sil in one go like a regular narrative book. Because it is not that at all. YMMV.
