It's Just Not As Good

cimoreneApart from just grieving for Snookums and missing him, it kinda seems like... even though they're both adorable and sweet and I love them, and Tristana's my baby and Sipuli is unbelievably endearing sometimes...
... they are both just lacking. They don't want to be hugged nearly as much!
Tristana wants to be hugged and petted for maybe twenty minutes or forty each day, in addition to which she might deign to sleep curled up in a ball on my lap, but not too much, because she can't miss her seventeen hours a day inside the duvet tent against the bedroom radiator.
Sipuli likes being hugged actively and she'll do a dramatic fainting into my arms routine and do a backbend over my elbow, hooking her claws on my sleeve. And then if she thinks I wasn't paying enough attention to her she'll do it again once or twice until I drop everything to pet her with both hands. She'll find some way to sit halfway up my chest in order to be under my chin, because she thinks my lap is too far away. (She likes my knitting as a seat cushion, but she is offended by me trying to knit instead of dropping everything to pay attention to her.) But these hugging sessions only last a few minutes, and she usually wants to go somewhere else to nap, like inside the turtle-shaped cat bed or into her carrier. She won't stretch out along my torso and purr. And she won't stay if I pick her up - she'll allow it, but she has to leave and then come back if it wasn't her idea.
Wax says they are just being normal Cornish rexes, and it was Snookums and Anubis who were unusually snuggly. I know that's more or less true, but Tristana and Sipuli're also both less snuggly than Lily or the BB, too. And it's really bothering me! Stretching out somewhere to read doesn't feel complete until there's a purring cat weighing me down. I have a weird niggling loneliness even when I'm actively babysitting a cat who will start crying heartbrokenly if I leave the room to hug Wax instead! They demand company and then go off and sleep alone!
Tristana was on my lap constantly when Snookums was alive, because he wanted to snuggle with me, and she wanted to snuggle with him. But she was there attached to him like a barnacle. Maybe she and Sipuli will make friends eventually and then they'll both want to sit on the sofa with us. I hope so. They are making progress still, I think, but it's agonizingly slow.
