That didn't bother me with Twitter, even though you could read it constantly - it felt less immediate and threatening than a chat or text conversation for some reason. I don't think this really makes sense per se, but in my mind it felt more like posting on lj (dw), with a good insulating layer and no expectation of real time. Also since discord is more like chat rooms, it's like... every time you leave you potentially miss a bunch of stuff; it probably only works if you don't feel a pressure to "keep up" but just treat it as like a virtual coffee shop you can drop into - like IRC, which Wax and I both used for fannish conversations a lot in like, 2004-6. But if I do that my imagination has a chance to paint it as like walking into a coffee shop full of strangers, lol.
