today someone commented on a My Chemical Romance alternate universe fanfiction novel she posted SEVENTEEN YEARS AGO just to tell her they were super creeped out to realize that the characters in the fic were 15 and 21, respectively.

1. It's fiction;

2. the legal age of consent is 16 in most places, so while 15/21 is not ideal, it's not the end of the world.

I've spent much of my teaching career trying to explain to students the social and sexual mores of the 70s, which I also only learned via history. But it's an entirely different thing to have to do it with things we lived through as adults!!!

FWIW, I've been rereading (actually relistening) to a bunch of MCR fic--bandom is definitely having a resurgence with the new tour and I'm all there for it!!!

I write in Hobbit movie fandom. Ten years ago when I started my epic fic, age gap was not a thing. Now it is. I expect an upcoming romance plot to get some pushback, I’m just not sure how much. Will people who’ve invested half a million words in a fic give up on it?

I would laugh so hard they'd hear it through the internet, and then tell them that they forgot to check the date on the fic - if they read it in 2025, the characters are now 32 and 38, so no one's purity is at risk!
