this one is called 'regek' in my head. it's the obligatory jack the ripper episode of star trek. everyone does it, don't they? mr scott is implicated in a few murders of women by stabbing, and it turns out they were committed by an eeeeeevil energy being from the dawn of time who goes around feeding on fear. when they scare it out of the body it's inhabiting, it flees to the computer and chants shrilly/breathily from all around, 'regek REGEK regek regek regekregek REGEEEEEEEEK!'

(so see, a much more fun title, too.)

in the computer, it has the ability to generate terror by cutting off life support, so mccoy shoots the whole crew up with a powerful tranquilizer. they're sitting at their stations giggling

(regek: ...and you're all going to DIE in HORRIBLE AGONY and there's NOTHING YOU CAN DO! [paraphrase]
sulu, with silly grin: whoever he is, captain... he sure needs to calm down. [also paraphrase] ::giggle::!)

spock over-rides the computer's programming and asks it to compute pi to the last digit, explaining to jim that it will gradually take over more and more of the computer's circuits since the task is impossible. 'but it won't last long,' spock cautions. 'how long?' says kirk. 'a few hours at most.' kirk replies with an air of mild surprise, 'oh, that should be plenty of time.'

when they at last have everyone on the ship tranquilized but the mccoy, kirk, spock, and the president of the planet ('i'll take a chance on spock,' says kirk--bwahahaha. is it because we'd notice if spock started acting oddly or because spock would be horribly humiliated to betray any emotions as the tranks would make him do?), jim says to mccoy, 'what would happen if the being entered a tranquilized body?'

mccoy: well, jim, it might take up knitting. certainly nothing more dangerous than that.

a few moments later they've got its present body pinned to the floor. it's shouting 'you'll all die!' they give it the injection.

tranquilized evil from dawn of time (TEftDoT): you'll ALL--::pause:: ::dreamily:: i'm going to kill you ALL.

spock and kirk lift him and sling him over kirk's shoulder. as they're leaving the room, TEftDoT is chanting hypnotically, interspersed with giggles and in a nasal-ish cartoon-voice falsetto, 'die, die, die, die, die...'

I've got to say, these descriptions of TOS are really entertaining to me. Almost enough to make me bug my dad to gimme his tapes of them all. Cause all I've ever seen is the tribble episode. [shudder]

i enjoy snarky!kirk in that one. really, he hardly ever acts like that. i'm guessing a former grudge against mr whatsisface and/or troubles with something else. would say pms, but, you know.

more importantly, there's a scene near the beginning that starts with k and s alone in an empty conference room together with no papers or any kind of business on the table. kirk's perched on the edge of the table sipping coffee and spock appears to be standing actually between his knees and their eyes are locked. mm-hmmmmmmmmmmm.

well doesn't that just segue nicely in with the "sci-fi as means of pushing cultural limitations" arguement? Plus, y'know. The show spawned slash: I guess it only makes sense that it's pretty slashy. Mmmm...slash. I think I'd be into it more if I could get over my overwhelming non-attraction to Shatner. Although he is much less plastic-y in person. Hmmm.

yeah, his makeup on the show? terrible. his mascara, sometimes good, mostly just amusing. he has his moments when he's repulsive and his moments when he's ... not so much. i have to say i'm more into the characters--and the chemistry. (and the cheesy plots.) although nimoy's repulsive moments (at the age of 36, that is) are few and veeeeeery far between, imo.
