The yoga studio where I teach hasn’t been paying me on time (AAM: 4th one down):

I’ve been teaching yoga for about four years now and was hired for my first job at this small group training facility. I teach once a week and often sub for one of the two other instructors. I previously got paid monthly. I have a full-time job and this is my side gig. So, it’s money I use for things like gifts, or save up for vacations.
Over the last two years, my monthly payment stretched to being paid every two months. This past year, it’s stretched out to being paid every four or five months. I’ve asked the owners several times to leave a check for me for next week. I’ve also asked if there is an easier way for them to pay me, such as Venmo or direct deposit.
I’m at the point now where I’m owed for over 21 classes ($40 per class). Enrollment in the small training groups seems to have dropped as I’m seeing new members less. People do join for the yoga-only package to come to the yoga classes. What’s the best way to ask to be paid and let them know I can’t/shouldn’t have to wait longer than two months for payment? I’m at the point now where I want to say that I won’t teach until I get paid, but that isn’t really my vibe.

Alison responds: saying that you won’t teach until you get paid should be your vibe )

1. The rain is over! Well, mostly anyway. It looks like there's a good chance of some more on Thursday, but that should just be a one-day thing. Today was very chilly, though, even colder than it was when it was actually raining!

2. I made spam fried rice for dinner. Haven't had it in a while and it just reminded me of how tasty it is.

3. Chloe wants to know why you're upside down. That's pretty silly of you.

This is another old meme that I find particularly interesting because it's a lot harder than it can seem at first. I mean, I could rattle off dozens of characters I love off the top of my head, but listing 3 that are similar to me in some ways is not so straightforward. At least to me.

Anyway, here's my current choice (and it's interesting to see how different they are from the ones I chose the first time around, 10 years ago - Hermione Granger, Elinor Dash wood from Sense&Sensibility and Jaye from Wonderfalls):

InCollage_20251118_172527462

  1. Margaret Hale from North&South. A strong-willed woman who's really not a good judge of character. Generous but proud, her family is very important to her. She's also generous and compassionate and I think I am too.

  2. Tami Taylor from Friday Night Lights. Isn't it a bit sad that I could come up only with her as an example of a grown woman who is a wife and mother but is not only defined by these two roles? She also had a career in education (she was a guidance counselor and then a vice principal or something along those lines). Of course, I wish I was half as cool as her.

  3. Mirabel from Encanto. This is because quite a few of my students said I remind them of her. Lol. I think they meant physically what with my short curly hair and the glasses, buy I must say the bubbly personality, the tendency to people-pleasing and her love for her family are something else we have in common.

Which characters do you think are similar to you in some ways and why?

2025 reading progress: 97 books

Of the three books I was reading last post, I finished the two science fiction novels and abandoned the romance--The Vicar and the Rake was fine, I guess, but I wasn't convinced by the kissing-while-feverish plot device, and when I got distracted by yet another book, I didn't go back to it. The Robots of Dawn by Isaac Asimov was a disappointment--too slow, too long, weird sex stuff, and Daneel was relegated to a secondary character. The Potency of Ungovernable Impulses was not disappointing, I was on the edge of my seat, but then I almost forgot about it until I looked at my reading list again; funnily enough I just finished rereading The Hound of the Baskervilles and realized that spoiler ). Anyway, at the end of The Hound of the Baskervilles, Holmes and Watson go to dinner and a show, but I can't remember what Mossa and Pleiti do.

Currently reading: Mr Collins in Love by Lee Welch (audiobook read by Joel Leslie). I like this narrator, having imprinted on him from so many Cat Sebastian audiobooks, but I'm not sure how I feel about this one so far. I'm presently also eyeing the second Witcher novel I just checked out from the library.

1. I decided to have a work from home day today so that I didn't have to drive in the rain. The morning was actually pretty sunny and nice, but we got a bunch more rain this afternoon. I think that's supposed to be it for now, though. I did manage to take an early afternoon walk just before the rain kicked in.

2. I was supposed to have a web meeting at five this evening, but it got pushed to next Monday.

3. A couple months ago I ordered a new pair of shoes because I really like these ones and didn't want to find that when I actually need a new pair, they've been discontinued. Recently I noticed it getting harder and harder to walk on wet pavement without slipping, and when I looked at the bottoms of my shoes, found the tread completely gone, so yesterday I broke out the new shoes and can now walk without fear of slipping all the time! So then I decided maybe I should order another backup pair, just in case, and found they're currently on sale for half off. Both because it's such a good deal and because the deep discount made me suspicious they might be discontinuing them, I went ahead and ordered two pairs, so now I'm set for a while.

4. Tuxie really likes this cat house on rainy days. I know he has somewhere he usually sleeps that's more fully sheltered, but he seems to like being out in the rain a bit, so this gives him the best of both worlds.

DEAR HARRIETTE: My boyfriend recently moved in with me, and ever since then, my cat’s behavior has completely changed. She’s been acting out: scratching furniture, hiding for hours and even refusing to eat sometimes. She used to be calm and affectionate, but now she seems anxious and territorial. My partner is trying to be patient, but I can tell he’s getting frustrated, especially since the cat hisses at him whenever he walks by or tries to sit near me. It’s creating tension between us, and I feel stuck in the middle trying to keep everyone happy. I’ve tried introducing them slowly, giving the cat space and even buying new toys to distract her, but nothing seems to help. My boyfriend thinks I’m overreacting and that the cat will “get over it,” but I know she’s genuinely stressed.

I feel guilty because I was so excited for us to finally live together, and now it feels like we’re both walking on eggshells around my pet. I love them both, but I’m starting to wonder if this living situation is sustainable. How can I help my cat adjust to this big change without it putting more strain on my relationship? -- Standoff

Phoenixsong.net banner

PhoenixSong.net, a Harry Potter fanfiction and fanart archive, is being imported to the Archive of Our Own (AO3).

In this post:

Background explanation

PhoenixSong.net is being archived at AO3 to help ensure that the works will remain available. AO3 will also give its users the ability to review and respond to reviews, which hasn’t been the case at PhoenixSong.net for a while now.

The purpose of the Open Doors Committee’s Online Archive Rescue Project is to assist moderators of archives to incorporate the fanworks from those archives into the Archive of Our Own. Open Doors works with moderators to import their archives when the moderators lack the funds, time, or other resources to continue to maintain their archives independently. It is extremely important to Open Doors that we work in collaboration with moderators who want to import their archives and that we fully credit creators, giving them as much control as possible over their fanworks. Open Doors will be working with Sherylyn to import PhoenixSong.net into a separate, searchable collection on the Archive of Our Own. As part of preserving the archive in its entirety, all images currently in PhoenixSong.net will be hosted on the OTW's servers, and embedded in their own AO3 work pages.

We will begin importing works from Phoenixsong.net to the AO3 after November. However, the import may not take place for several months or even years, depending on the size and complexity of the archive. Creators are always welcome to import their own works and add them to the collection in the meantime.

What does this mean for creators who have work(s) on PhoenixSong.net?

We will send an import notification to the email address we have for each creator. We'll do our best to check for an existing copy of any works before importing. If we find a copy already on the AO3, we will add it to the collection instead of importing it. All works archived on behalf of a creator will include their name in the byline or the summary of the work.

All imported works will be set to be viewable only by logged-in AO3 users. Once you claim your works, you can make them publicly-viewable if you choose. After 30 days, all unclaimed imported works will be made visible to all visitors. We will then permanently close down the site.

Please contact Open Doors with your PhoenixSong.net pseud(s) and email address(es), if:

  1. You'd like us to import your works, but you need the notification sent to a different email address than you used on the original archive.
  2. You already have an AO3 account and have imported your works already yourself.
  3. You’d like to import your works yourself (including if you don’t have an AO3 account yet).
  4. You would NOT like your works moved to the AO3, or would NOT like your works added to the archive collection.
  5. You are happy for us to preserve your works on the AO3, but would like us to remove your name.
  6. You have any other questions we can help you with.

Please include the name of the archive in the subject heading of your email. If you no longer have access to the email account associated with your PhoenixSong.net account, please contact Open Doors and we'll help you out. (If you've posted the works elsewhere, or have an easy way to verify that they're yours, that's great; if not, we will work with the PhoenixSong.net mod to confirm your claims.)

Please see the Open Doors Website for instructions on:

If you still have questions...

If you have further questions, visit the Open Doors FAQ, or contact the Open Doors committee.

We'd also love it if fans could help us preserve the story of PhoenixSong.net on Fanlore. If you're new to wiki editing, no worries! Check out the new visitor portal, or ask the Fanlore Gardeners for tips.

We're excited to be able to help preserve PhoenixSong.net!

tozka: multiple popples crowded around one big book (popples reading)
[personal profile] tozka

I’m luckily in a neighborhood where I can make a big circuit and visit 4-5 Little Free Libraries in about an hour’s walk. I’ve done two of those loops so far, and have gotten quite a few books! Some I’m planning on reading myself, and some I got just so move into other LFL later.

It’s a great area to walk around and explore, honestly. Even if I don’t find a book to take, it’s fun seeing the old buildings and the trees nearly bare of their leaves.

These are my logs for my 2 weeks so far in Denver!

New LFL visited

  • LFL #12071 – Denver, CO
  • LFL #12326 – Denver, CO
  • LFL #26248 “Leftin’s Little Free Library” – Denver, CO
  • LFL #49608 – Denver, CO
  • LFL #119643 “Nancy’s Book Nook” – Denver, CO

Also found a few unofficial/un-chartered LFL book swap spots: an interesting dollhouse style (shown below), a bookshelf found in front of a house, and a community book exchange in the laundry room at my sit.

Dropped off: A Trip of One’s Own (picked up in [redacted location] LFL in September), Taking a Stand (picked up at UBS in Ann Arbor).

Added to my stash: An Urchin in the Storm; The Tomb of Zeus; American Sherlock: Murder, Forensics, and the Birth of American CSI; Walking My Dog Jane: From Valdez to Prudhoe Bay Along the Trans-Alaska Pipeline; Cheap Land Colorado: Off-Gridders at America’s Edge; Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup; Pioneer Days in the Catskill High Peaks: Tannersville and the Region Around; The Quokka Question.

Photos under the cut!

I'm up early to call for a doctor's appointment at eight before a "job hunting course" at nine. The latter is something I've seen twice before and am expecting a fair amount of wasted time this week, but they do provide an individual coach to give advice and talk through options and that should help me, not only because of my executive dysfunction, but also because I'm genuinely torn about what to do next.

I don't know how much of the day I have to wait for a call back from the health center, though, so I will have to leave to take the call at some point.

1. We had a great time at Disneyland this morning, despite some rain.

2. Woke up this morning to find a huge ant infestation in the kitchen. We've had six months at least that were ant-free, but it's not surprising with the amount of rain we got yesterday. They were all over the sink and surrounding counters and even in some drawers and cupboards. D: So that was a huge cleanup job before we went out this morning, but thankfully when we got home there were still quite a few here and there, but not a whole other swarm, and now it's really just one or two. Tomorrow's supposed to be more rain, but that should be the end of it, so hopefully after that the ants will go back to staying outside.

3. Ollie likes the new bathmat placement as well.

"It's set in a time when things were hard for black people in America" - a line which so flabbergasted me that I don't think I ever figured out what to say.

But this one may have topped it!

"The story is about a black girl, somewhere between 8 and 16 years old, from a black family."

...I'm dying to ask why they think they need to specify that this girl is the same race as everybody else in her family, when that's usually how this works. There's no indication in the rest of the post that we might have reason to think she's not.

The forecast this morning said a little rain early and then cloudy but no rain for most of the day. It was not raining when I took my walk in the morning, but we did get a bit of sprinkling on the drive down to Anaheim...and then as soon as we got to the parking lot it started to full on rain. D:

Yesterday's treadmill session was the longest yet and incredibly boring, even with A Court of Fey and Flowers distracting me. I ended up with the beginning of a blister and no willpower left to resist the prospect of samosas and saag paneer at the Indian restaurant down the block, but honestly $45 for three meals is pretty reasonable.

And then I was awake from 4:30 to 6:30 and am not happy about it. But I made decent hash with fried eggs for breakfast and put the cast iron re-seasoning in the oven alongside a packet of garlic, and made a small pot of cranberry applesauce with red wine on the stove, and sent the robovac trundling around my bedroom, so I rescued my Sunday from a pretty dismal start.

Yet again I have to go to campus more than once this week, and this can only end badly.

Life Updates

Kind of a bleh week for blogging but enjoyable for living– relaxing and non-stressful, which is all that I want.

One thing of note: I realized I booked my flight from here to my next sit for the wrong day, but luckily I was able to cancel it and use the money towards a ticket for the correct day. I DID end up paying double what I originally did, which sucks, but at least I’ll get there on the right date now.

And it worked out okay anyway, money-wise, because the owner invited me to stay the night before she leaves, so I’ll save $100-something on a hotel! It all balances out in the end, really.

🐈 Curious orange kitty (codename Mr. B-Denver) has figured out how to open cabinets and got into the ones right above the fridge, which was hilarious! Luckily nothing important is up there. Overweight Siamese kitty (codename Ms. S-Denver) meanwhile has warmed up to me a lot and is now regularly sleeping next to me while I work on the computer. They not lap cats, which is kind of a bummer, but they do like to be in the same room as much as possible.

1. That rain is really raining, but I did get in three walks today. (I usually get four on Saturdays but skipped the farmers market as I had already taken one pretty wet walk and the rain didn't let up much until after they were closed.) It was drizzling when I took my morning walk and I did take an umbrella, but it really didn't seem too bad, so I decided to stop and get bagels and lattes, but it got much rainier and windier after I got my stuff, and the cup holders they have do not have handles (just those four cup cardboard things), which made it very awkward to carry, especially with an umbrella. And the tread is mostly gone on my shoes, so I have to walk carefully on wet pavement and couldn't even hurry home. D: Carla was very happy about the surprise bagels and lattes, though, and I enjoyed mine as well.

2. It's still looking like tomorrow will just be cloudy with a small chance of rain, so we're planning on Disneyland in the morning.

3. I think I've got the Christmas tree branches all pulled apart and fluffed out. We still have our old tree skirt (Winnie the Pooh), so I put that down and will start on ornaments at some point. It's been so long since we had a tree, I don't even remember all our old ornaments, though I do know there were a lot of penguin ones.

4. One of the cats sat on the bathmat too soon after peeing and got pee on it, so I had to wash it, and after washing, I just set it in this basket rather than putting it back on the floor, and suddenly it's the most popular spot.
