My mother's finally won me over, and so I am forced to recommend a mystery writer to you: Dorothy Sayers. (You know, the one that "To Say Nothing of the Dog" talks about incessantly.) Anything with both Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane in it is FABULOUS. Witty British banter - from the 30's. And they insult the Victorias as a plus!
