it's from the point of view of the model in vermeer's famous painting, girl with a pearl earring. in reality nothing is known about the model; in the book she's a sixteen year old girl hired as a maid in his household and she becomes his maid. it's quiet and beautiful and it's bursting with sexual tension. she's just supposed to be the maid but vermeer starts asking her to clean his studio, and then to pose, and he's totally ... oblivious, as great artists perhaps often are, to RL ie that this gets her in trouble with his wife, even though it's not like she can say no to him as she's also his maid. and then he makes her pose for the painting. the most tense/sexual scene, the one that's stayed with me for the past (six?) years since i read the book, is where he decides the painting needs that pearl earring... and he makes her pierce her ear. she's frightened but she can't really say no, and he's ASKING her, and--ahhh. colin firth is vermeer. that's him nuzzling her ear in the icon. i don't believe that actually happens in the book. it's gorgeous and UST and bittersweet.
