i was bored so i made a webpage with all my icons (a few which now belong to other people and a few which were presents, too). i'm not giving them away, or anything. well, admittedly i have a lot of extras, so i suppose you could try begging me, but that's not why i put this up. i just... uh... felt like it. painful self-indulgence: she-ra, britney and christina, tori amos lyrics, my pets, lord of the rings, domlij, lots of Real Art.

just curious--what program or combination of programs did you use to make them? and how does one de-pixelate, shrink the pixels, reduce their number, whatever, in a given chunk of image?

I know virtually nothing about icon-making. other people make them, and I say 'oooh, pretty,' and sometimes 'oh, thank you, pretty,' and look baffled.

ideally one uses a spiffy photo editing program like photoshop or a spiffy general image program like paintshop pro (which i'm fond of). i, however, don't have it, so i use paint. paint is the free version of paintshop which comes with windows.

one selects a chunk of image and stretches it to a given percentage of its natural size (you can make it smaller or larger), crops it to exactly 100x100 pixels using another function, saves it all as a JPG if it wasn't alread. you can also cut out bits of the image (ie, getting rid of the background), which is probably the most time-consuming and boring.

in paintshop pro, you can lighten and darken the picture as a whole, airbrush it, smudge-blend it, make parts of it (including text) transparent to different degrees, and do lots of other cool stuff. i imagine photoshop has the same capabilities
