here're some they both happened monday.

me: are you having a good day, sir?
sir: it's okay. and now it's half over.
me, scornfully: HALF. it's not HALF over. it's only--[looks up to clock]... ... ...oh my gosh it IS twelve!
sir: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH.
me: whew. okay.

little boy: [sits in a 'car cart,' basically giant wheeled little tykes pickup with the shopping basket in the bed part... with his feet sticking out the window]
me: hasn't anyone ever told you to keep your hands and feet inside the car when you're driving?
l.b.: why?
me: well, because somebody might be going by in a car, or inside the store with another cart, or just walking, and they might bump into you and they could hit your foot and they could HURT you. and they could even BREAK your leg.
l.b.: why???
me: well, they might not be looking where they were going.
l.b., horrified: WHY???
me: well... they might be... um... hey, you seem to have TWO steering wheels.
l.b.: why?
me to l.b.'s mom: is he in the why stage?
