long, long day of orientations and shopping. my hair was charming and my outfit stylish and adorable. my cuteness would have to be seen to be believed.

i have a phone, and a bank account--although i can't use it yet because the card has to come in the mail (about three weeks). i have to find out how to wire money into it now. i'm not quite sure how that's done. i don't have a backpack, though i need one desperately. i hiked all over today, the last few hours of it in the mall backpack-hunting while my poor flimsy-handled bookbag cut into my shoulder. nothing was satisfactory. and i didn't find another purse either--my main squeeze right now is suede, and we all know what rain (and snow) would like to do to it.

exciting day of orientations. more to come monday, when i have to visit the police for a residence permit, and see the computer center about internet service and an email address, the department about registration and the somethingsomething about a student id card.

my international office contact, gurli-maria gardberg, is an original like her name. young, friendly, and charming. reminds me slightly of [livejournal.com profile] mace_m for unknown reason--maybe just the voice, as they don't really look alike. they should probably date. does maija even swing that way? i don't know! the international office other-people are cool too. i'm jealous of my hostess tove's student tutor--they're having meetings every night. ours was sort of disorganized and bleh, although it could be worse. maybe monday will be more exciting.

there's a student folk dance group! and i didn't bring my modern dance shoes. it's probably too cold for them anyway.

You want me go out with someone called "Gurli"?! ;-) Actually, I have add the name to my ever growing "what the hell where their parents thinking when they name the kid that?!" collection, since I've never heard of it before.

Btw, it's starting to look like the first meeting of the English club this fall will be held on Wednesday Sept. 8th in Koulu (the same pub you found us in the last time) at 6pm. Perhaps I'll see you there?

And, as I've told Wax, if you need any help with the move, just ask me! I'm supposed to read articles next week, and any reason not to have to do so is welcomed! :-)

I've volunteered for carrying duty, so I'll see you on Wednesday! Let's just hope I don't drop anything fragile, like anything that contains dishes. *g*

I've been quite fond of her granny so far (for someone so elderly she's got spunk, and I thought she was much nicer than some of the old people I've known), but her reaction to you two being together is just too irrational.

AHAHAHAHAHAH the vsd arwen... i loved that line. i have an aloof, unavailable elf princess shirt. but i left it in america.

'gurli' is from the turkish word for 'rose,' which is like 'gorlad' or something similar. apparently it's also a name you encounter on old ladies sometimes, or so she says. but then it's actually hyphenated which it wouldn't be if maria were the middle name, so what does that make it? it's like Sara Munro, Mary Anne, Anna Katherine... only WEIRD and turkish! or Katherine Elizabeth (my high school friend diana: 'y'all, i wanna name my daughter katherine elizabeth and call her katie bess. do y'all think that's too country?').

I can't help it, but the name Gurli immediately makes me think of the Finnish verb 'kurlata' (to gargle), or possibly that gurli is a noun meaning 'the tiniest of gargles'.

*giggles*
