there's this big ... i don't know. trend. not just in fanfiction, on the internet. to make intransitive verbs transitive-- i drift my gaze over his face for instance.

cim's verdict: NO.

eta: it goes the other way too! auugh! help! the seeping penis. a seeping thing is something that is coming gradually out of a container in small amounts. usually, liquids seep. a seeping thing is not a container that has things coming gradually out of it. for that matter, nothing SEEPS out of a cock in the first place, except if it has a wound on it. well, i suppose you could say sweat was seeping from pores, but to me that sounds a bit... awkward and redundant.

eta2: that's not really the opposite of transitivising intransitive verbs because 'seep' IS intransitive, and she hasn't tried to make it transitive; she's done something similar, though, because the fluid (or other emergent substance) which is supposed to be the subject of 'seep' becomes--not an actual object but--sort of a mental, implied one. a usual phrase would be "the seeping fluid."

What if you rephrase it as something like 'I let my gaze drift over his face'? Is it better, worse or essentially the same?

I think that was her point - that what you suggested is correct use, and what too many people do today is ignore that you just can't say 'I drift my gaze'. For me that would suggest the 'I' in the sentence drifting, not the gaze, and that's just weird.

Hey, I never paid attention to English grammar in school either, and managed to scrape up the highest grade in the matriculation exam. Easily, even. I just knew if something sounded right or wrong, and most of the time I got it right. Of course, my English has gotten steadily worse since graduation, because I don't push myself. I bet my vocabulary loses at least two words every day, and soon I'll be reduced to 'thingy' and 'stuff'.

yep. your gaze drifts: you can't DRIFT something. you can let it drift, or make it drift. just like in swedish-- träd kan falla; man kan inte falla träd. man kan fälla träd; träd kan inte fälla. fälla is transitive and falla is intransitive. drift is intransitive.

...You know, sometimes it makes me feel really stupid that you probably know more Swedish than me, and I took the obligatory Swedish for five years. Okay, so they were from grade 8 to high school graduation, so the pace was understandably slower, but still. Just goes to show that since it's mandatory and everyone's supposed to hate it, they teach us as little as possible to make sure everyone will pass. And still half of my class hardly did. ::le facepalm::

Don't ask me why I never got around to learning more on my own if it bothers me that much. Because the answer is 'I'm just that lazy.' XP

men jag är inte så säker på at jag kan mera svenska än dig. jag har studerat inte så mycket eller lyssnat på så mycket svensk musik heller. (eller var det bara kirsti som gillar kent? jag bara tänker att om hon gör någonting så gör du det också ;). )

och om jag kan mera svenska, det är också att jag har inget annat att studera, och jag går på kursen 10 timmar om veckan.

Jag tycker att min svenska (tror att det går svenska, -n, men vet inte...) låter som jag översattade från engelska till svenska -- jag säget 'du vet' och använder 'så' kanske för mycket.

jag har inte någon gång hört 'tajt'. men vi har läst en text där den stod 'vind- och vattentätt,' och en som sa att stockholms gamla stan var 'restaurangtätt'.

in other words, tätt != tight (riktigt) utan "-packed" eller "-stuffed" etc, eller "proof" (fast engelska har förstås "watertight" också).

Ja, du kan använda 'tätt' för 'watertight' och 'tightpacked', men vi tänker om 'tight' i denna satsen på ett annorlunda sett, jag tycker.

Crap, I have no translations to clarify, but believe me, it's just two different kinds of tight. Or maybe you should ask Wax before we rupture something. ::g:: Om hon säger att 'tätt' går, sen kan jag acceptera det. Men i alla fall ska det sen vara 'tättA jeans'.

...det är bara att det låter ju så konstigt att samma ord kan betyda "cool" (or in more of-the-moment slang... tight) och "sizzlin' hot in a sexual manner".

do young, slang-using swedes equate sexuality with stylishness? my sense of "snygg" was always that it was a fairly, well, clean and. legit. kind of stylish, which is just--too priggish for "hot," which is supposed to convey a kind of animal appeal--i mean, well, HOT--a fairly straightforwardly sexual reference.

I don't think 'snygg' really has a sexual connotation, it's more like a word you can apply to a guy/girl in front of your parents. But gimme a break -- how many words do you think they taught us in high school for describing someone's sex appeal? Maybe I should've said that it was the only even remotely appropriate word that I knew in Swedish and thus made it mean what I wanted it to mean here. Hmm. Det går 'god, godare, godast' för mat, och 'god, bättre, bäst' för andra saker. Men Ulrika sade 'godaste film som jag har sett' och 'vädret är godare än förra veckan'. Läraren tyckte att det var fel, men jag tror att de finska använder 'godare, godast' just som det.

a transitive verb is a verb that has a direct object: to fell a tree. "fell" is transitive, and "tree" is the object. intransitive verbs cannot have direct objects: a tree falls. tree is the subject. there's no gap in meaning to be filled with an object.

some verbs can be both. for instance, a boat floats, but one can also float a boat. but that's rarely true, and it isn't of "drift".
