this movie's called keisarikunta ("empire"--it's a bar) and came out before christmas. the finnish-language films don't get subtitled even in swedish, and it's been running all that time and still isn't on dvd, so i haven't seen it yet. but it's set in the thirties or forties and the trailer was enough to convince me that i wanted the soundtrack. wax bought it a few weeks ago and i'd've listened to it non-stop if she didn't keep complaining.*

and as samples here are the three songs from the trailer that really, truly hooked me. they're all in english, but 2/12 tracks are instrumental and there's a fair dish of finnish too. the finnish jazz is charming.
charles salter - minnie the moocher it's that "hi di hi di hi" song, if you didn't know--the one fry & laurie sing in the pilot of jeeves & wooster. the lead singer's voice is characterful and there's this backup chorus and. it's really irresistable.
tidjân - diga diga doo lots of nonsense words in a rich bass voice you could drown in.
emma salokoski - i'm a dreamer the song that tipped the scale for me because the one line at its emotional climax stuck in my brain from the first time i heard it. a sweet clear high alto voice, wistful and beguiling, with a lullaby-ish tune.
*she only approves of playing things on repeat when they're her newest british indie rock fixations.
