cimorene: painting of a glowering woman pouring a thin stream of glowing green liquid from an enormous bowl (misanthropy)

[edit: in translation: see cim sound like the silmarillion! um. bwahahaha.]

my notes for this passage look like:

in athens, of the [ruling assembly] you came by night [you all say--tense??--eto ending] the difficulty, and the wailing from out of the port through the long wall into the city through has come, the one [to? the other] report (genitive?). as [being] the former of? the night no one slept, of [reflexive pronoun] alone (plural accusative) the (also accusative?) destroy (genitive?) of? lament, all the cety very as yet himself (masc. nominative singular) [intensive/personal pronoun] [male reflexive = themselves] (plural participle) thinking [first aorist participle? to be persuaded, 3rd person singular?] what sort of (nominative accusative singular) [aorist they make or do] (accusative) people of Melos (both and?) [accusative plural another=others??] and [accusative many] [=MANY OTHERS?] of the greeks. and to (dative feminine) the assembly [they made or did].

wtf.

*dies*

okay. what i have now is: you came among the athenians from the trireme, and the difficulty was told by night, and the wailing from the port has come through the wall, into and throughout the city, one reporting to another. because of this no one slept all night, only lamenting being utterly ruined, all the city still by thinking having persuaded themselves what the melosians and many others of the greeks did (and what they did also to the assembly).

reads like the fucking silmarillion. of course that could be because, you know, the bible was translated from ancient greek too, and the silmarillion is essentially a parody of the bible. fuck, my head hurts. six hours of greek.

I'd take your Greek and Japanese but I'm bad enough at Italian and French...

Now I recall why I haven't been doing Greek for the last couple of years.

I always rather enjoyed the process of translation-- it was a wonderful puzzle-- but the results were generally a bit anticlimactic.
