perrin (swinging a length of plastic spring somewhat like a slinky): there's a speaker in the spring that plays the funny songs. i'm playing the funny songs.
me: oh. what song are you playing?
p: i'm playing the funny songs.
me: oh, but which song are you playing?
p: i'm playing the funny songs!
me: oh, okay.
p: in the funny songs there's a mama who scratches speakers.
jenny: there's what?
p: there's a mama who scratches speakers in the funny songs.
j: ooooh. that's VERY strange. what is the purpose of this... scratching action?
p: the purpose is to get the tape off.
j: oh. well that certainly might be a, um, necessary measure sometime to, uh, get the tape off.
