HELP WANTED! i need to interview as manypeople as possible for this project. the intent is to explore how, in im conversations, people interpret the intent behind what is said by the people they are talking to and how they believe the people are feeling based on those words. i have a list of seven words (exclamations, really) used on im and a bunch of questions about them. please help! and please direct other people here to help with it, too.

hit me up: aol im cimorene111; msn messenger cimfiction@hotmail.com.

or .

you can post answers in the comments (please! :(). just the answers are necessary.

1. do you agree to participate in this study?

2. optional for demographics. throwaway info that i might use.
...a) gender
...b) age
...c) are you involved in slash fandom and/or yaoi?

ii. the actual quiz
for the following questions, the words in bold are expressions that may be used in instant message conversations. i want to find out how you interpret them when someone says them to you. each question is a pair of adjectives that describe not the words themselves but the mental state or emotions of the person who says them. there's a number scale between them. please place all the bold words under the question on the scale; if those qualities don't apply to that word, please mark [4] for neutral (halfway between [1] and [7]). it's also perfectly acceptable for two words to have the same rating.

i'd like to point out that the emotional reaction to these sounds and thus how a person interprets them, is connected to said person's mother tongue...i, as a german, might/DO assocciate different moods with different sounds...the whole 'colour' and 'tone' of german is different from english...

yeah. i haven't decided yet whether to use foreign language speakers, though, because i believe it's possible that membership in fandom (ie exposure to the words) is more important than their associations through english.

oh, foreigners can 'get' them alright...but i think they will actively use them slightly differently...BECAUSE different sounds have different connotations in different cultures, and while it is perfectly possible to understand how others use them...when you expres yourself, that is such a mixed bag of just...stuff...lots of emotions and connotations and things you're not really aware of, but it's always there, resonating along the edges of the the 'official'/'visible' meaning...

my advice would be to exclude non-native speakers, it is bound to distort the result. and even if it doesn't...which would have to be proven in another study...you leave yourself wide open to critique if you do not take the native/non-native speaker thing into account...someone is bound to attack you for it. just spare yourself the hassle...
