i spent five hours today translating a scientific paper on psychiatry from norwegian, which i don't actually speak but which is almost 100% mutually comprehensible with swedish, into english. although this sort of thing is one of my favourite activities and it was engaging and fun--and aril the norwegian (wax's sister-in-law's stepfather) took me out for sushi--i was also surprised by how mentally exhausting it was. aril speaks english and is married to a swedish-speaker, but the barrier between swedish and norwegian is slightly higher when spoken than when written, which was just enough to be a little wearing. by the end of the five hours i was reduced to constantly thinking out loud in what i'm sure would be a very amusing cocktail of swedish-norwegian-english, and kept having to close my eyes and take a deep breath for a little mental break. that said, though, i can't wait to do it again tomorrow. for some reason i never quite realised how fascinating and envigorating translation could be.
we also spent about four hours shopping for a dress to fit wax, who has double-D breasts but is not proportionately fat, so dresses never fit her. not surprisingly, nothing fit her, although this one cocktail-length bronze satin formal dress came tantalisingly close. and was really hot. sadly it would have been impossible to alter, and the fabric store was heartbreakingly devoid of sufficiently similar patterns. on the plus side i wrote a tiiiiiiiiiny bit of tezuryo when i was waiting for her in the coffeeshop. ♥
and the jyousei shounen arc is DELIGHTFULLY full of inui and fuji being jointly and independently awesome and semi-omniscient, and talking to each other, and just. omg. i think i will die if i can't have a shirt that says OH, YOU THINK SO TOO... FUJI? so much love.

*perks up at the mention of TezuRyo*

Date: 2 May 2006 06:47 pm (UTC)wax is 5'5", but not only is she all boobs, she has no ass. so when thing fit over her boobs, they hang limply around her lower body in a very, very sad way. we really should invest in a sewing machine of some kind, but of course with formal dresses it's still a pain in the ass because i'm terrified to alter them for fear of snagging the fabric.
