i dreamed i was in the back of a large car with aubry and her little brother. in reality she does not have a little brother. anyway, we were hiding under some blankets and stuff and the car was being chased by helicopters because they thought she and her brother had planned one of those school shootings, only they hadn't. there was a teacher from the school there who knew they were innocent and she was saying to me, 'well, you can't blame the police, because after all they were absent a few days before--'

'right,' i said, 'before they got sick they should have made sure they knew that someone was planning to shoot up the school and found out exactly when it was going to happen.'

furthermore, if i were going to do a school shooting, would i be absent just a few days before, assuming i didn't wish to get caught (which they usually do, and anyway, it must've been a bomb or something, cause if it was a gun wouldn't someone have seen the perpetrators?)

what am i doing sitting here? i have a perfectly good linguistics book that i could be reading. i have to have read it and several others by sometime next week, and i should have some idea about my major when i pre-reg for next semester. besides which i've got to do catch-up reading in spanish for sure and start the essay this weekend. due a week from yesterday. eek, too soon, too soon.

i'm reading interpretation as pragmatics, which is more on the literary criticism side than the discourse analysis/linguistics one, but it should inform my readings in discourse analysis later. it still fascinates the hell out of me, frankly, but i just don't know if i can work minority language communities in (or foreign languages at all ^.^), and it would be a shame to not use my year abroad for some sort of focus.

i think i need to re-read susan faludi's backlash. it's been just over four years.

[edit: prompted by the review on amazon which this is excerpted from, of her second book, which came out two years ago:

Faludi attributes all sorts of contemporary cultural maladies and madness to chic pseudo-psychological causes, attempting to draw a comprehensive portrait of contemporary American males en route as the hopelessly flawed artifacts of an antiquated male-dominated culture whose characteristics are now failing males themselves. Of course, of all this is self-serving nonsense, and is a pretty thinly disguised effort to celebrate women by silent comparison. See how far we've come, baby? Rather than appreciating the ways in which each of the dozens of symptoms she describes are connected to the confusing & disruptive torrent of technical, economic, & social change erupting from the so-called "third wave" of the digital revolution, she infers that it is the lack of vision of a male-dominated society that is to blame. Nice try, but as chic as all this is, it warrants no cigar.

went to make dinner. scrambled three eggs with a few slivers of butter, dumped onto a paper plate.

in the pantry i discovered to my horror that the prepackaged, prepowdered parmesan i intended to steal was ALL GONE.

and i so i consume my eggs with white bread, salt, pepper, and an option later on white chedder cheez-its.

in other news, my hard drive is almost full of all this goddamned music and i don't know what to delete. i miss audiogalaxy. you can't delete something with the certainty that you'll be able to find it again.

and in OTHER other news the cuticle on the outer edge of my right pinky is all torn so it hurts whenever i have to use that finger to type with (which, fortunately, is not so very often). no, i haven't been picking at it. it's from the skin getting all wet in the dishroom (yes, despite rubber gloves) and then peeling. >.<

but! tomorrow is friday.
