TONY EASTLEY: A thoughtful and ever eloquent Ian Thorpe after the race. Mark Simkin is live on the line from Athens. Mark, at the end of that race, Thorpe said something to Pieter van den Hoogenband. Do we know what he said to him?

MARK SIMKIN: Yes Tony. Ian Thorpe looked up at that board, punched his arm in the air and screamed 'Yes'. He'd not just avenged his loss in Sydney – he'd beaten the time swum in Sydney. Tonight was a new Olympic record. And then Thorpe and the Dutchman embraced and the Australian did whisper in his ears something that it turns out – which is very interesting, particularly for people wondering is Ian Thorpe ever going to be hanging up his togs. Now we asked Ian Thorpe exactly what he said, and here's how he answered that question.

IAN THORPE: I said to him, well I guess that makes it one all and I'd like to see you again in Beijing. You know, that brings up the question that was asked before, and you know I intend to be swimming it again. Pieter and I are good friends and it is a wonderful experience to be able to challenge yourself in this race, to prepare so hard in it. And you know, that's what I've done, that's what Pieter's done. And Michael's done exactly the same thing. And it's good to be able to go out there and experience that with people that you know well. You know I think that you know, people kind of have their fate and their destiny and you know, that was what is was tonight. I've worked damn hard for this, I've worked hard for all of my swims and you know, it just happened for me tonight. here

from 2000 when vdh beat thorpe:

Thorpe and Hoogie chatted and laughed on the medal stand, covering everything from a joint photo session to a critical review of the movie "The Patriot." here

and here: As van den Hoogenband made his way past reporters, someone asked him, “Is this the greatest race?”

“Ever,” he replied, smiling.

Thorpe, who won gold in the 400 freestyle Saturday night, led the way in 1:47.22. The Aussie world record holder swam in the same heat with van den Hoogenband, who won the race in Sydney in 2000."

i woke up after three hours of sleep last night coughing, hacking and gagging.  tons of post-nasal drip, and i couldn't swallow it because of how badly my throat hurt.  i finally managed to go to sleep--sitting up.  i'm hoping this is an allergy and not an illness, since i'm leaving here in six more days.  luckily chugging tea with honey and lime seems to do something for it.
