nervous first steps into landlordry
29 Jul 2020 10:02 pmThe friend-of-a-friend is a nice old lady - well, 70-something, so not ancient - who is single and lectures and writes on an academic subject in which she has recognized expertise. Apparently she spends most of her time writing scholarly works now, according to the bridging friend who brought her over to tour our place.
She looked at another flat in a building that was new and clean and empty and she wanted to move in September, and we had to tell her we'd love to have her as a tenant but we had to advise her that we couldn't promise our house would be done by then. Things are looking up, but one can't predict these contractors reliably. Although there was an inspector and three electricians here this morning as well as a carpenter and they did all the kitchen rough wiring and hung gypsum board on one of the walls! (So there's still another wall, and priming the walls, the cabinets, then appliances - the hood and sink and dishwasher - that have to be installed by the plumbers; and the plumbers still have to install all the bathroom fixtures as well; and then the entire upstairs doesn't have electricity either, three rooms and the stairwell.)
So we kinda expected her to go with the other place for practicality, which was sad because we both really liked her and she's fascinating and she seemed to like us. But then she texted Wax this morning that she has decided to switch her plans to move in October instead! She's having some therapy in September in Turku that would make moving then less convenient anyway.
So... yay! But I guess we still need to both cross our fingers and start trying to move things as soon as possible. Paint things and empty things out of the garage to make more space to store MIL's and the tenant's extra furniture. And a second freezer. And also we have to talk to the... planning commission or... city whatever... to convert our house/lot back from a single-family to a two-family residence and possibly get an 'A' and 'B' on the addresses if necessary, however that works.
