the wind in åbo is frequently so strong that i have to stop walking for a moment or two and let it hold me in place, often with one foot in the air. today it was so powerful that, even though i was wearing giant sunglasses and i also kept turning my face away and closing my eyes, tears were streaming down my face by the time i made it home. five minutes later, one of my eyes is still watering. the city is windy all the time. matters weren't helped any by the architect who planned most of the city back in the day. it's laid out in a near-perfect grid, which means that it's practically impossible to get lost, but it also turns the streets into long windtunnels.
in other news, the cover of one of the issues of hikaru no go was so shamelessly suggestive that it made me crack up.

i have a new favourite snack.
isilya told me that i should post about it, even though i was in the process of virtuously squashing the impulse - it isn't like it's a real recipe, after all, but then, it is pretty great.
for starters, i should explain that this is only quick if you have pre-made pesto, and it's only good if you have good pesto. if you make it yourself, sure. if you buy it, it might not be good enough - fortunately for us, the swank grocery store downtown carries some really utterly delicious stuff in giant glass jars.
you need:
lemon juice
olive oil
pesto
salt
...and pasta. i cook the pasta, then rinse it with cold water. then i put a forkful of pesto - somewhere in the neighbourhood of a tablespoon - directly into the bowl i'm going to eat out of. i pour olive oil over it to cover the bottom of the bowl, a couple of tablespoons perhaps, then add a tablespoon of lemon juice. i salt it, mix the dressing with the fork, and then pour the pasta into the bowl and toss it together. also, i eat it with dried oregano sprinkled over, and tomatoes or green olives if we have them lying around.
isilya said, "that's not a snack! that's a delicious dinner!"
to make it into a delicious dinner, it's good to sautee some mushrooms and mix those in, and the more vegetables you add, the better. i'm fond of steamed broccoli with my pesto pasta. adding either of these things probably doubles the preparation time, which is why they don't make it into the snack version.
