in spanish conversation today we were introduced to an atrocious and outdated spanish pop artist named juan luis guerra. what is it with foreign language teachers and their taste in music? maybe just that they're old? at least this time she told us the time period so, you know, if you want a bit of atmosphere for a scene in a 70s (no - 80s? *has already forgotten*) discotheque in latin america i guess guerra is your man.

whereas the swedish teacher two years ago tried to actually tell us that a representative sample of swedish music was eva dahlgren, bo kaspers orkester and tomas ledin, and then she was like, "oh yeah, and there are also these guys named kent. you might have heard of them, i think some people like them". BITCH PLEASE. i've only now succeeded in scrubbing the foulness that was that stupid tomas ledin song out of my brain.

is juan luis guerra actually that foul? not quite, because the lyrics are cheesier but at least the music is bouncy and latin. but the lyrics - the lyrics.

cimness: like, it was. one was about oral sex with an extended metaphor about how he wanted to be a FISH and swim around all night in her "wetness" and touch her "fishbowl" with his nose.
aes: ....
aes: uh. what. the hell? XD

I pray to God I'm never sucked into a discussion of French pop, since the only name I was ever taught was Johnny Halliday. This is roughly the equivalent of being asked to name a famous actor and coming up with Troy Donoghue.

that sounds awesome. XD! in my spanish classes we only ever listened to mana and shakira--which, um, okay, actually i kind of really enjoyed both. but still! if you can't listen to bad foreign language pop in your foreign language class, where can you?

the other teacher played a video of juanes in concert on the first day of the spanish 2 that didn't happen! my first spanish teacher ever played some wacky like mexican traditional ballads which were really cool plus this spanish guy named paco ibañez who sets famous poetry from spanish literature to his own folk music. oddly enough no one has ever yet played shakira in a class i was in although one teacher pointed out a women's magazine with her on the cover. i have listened to shakira entirely at my own initiative. ♥
