still reading cj cherryh's foreigner, right in the middle of the climax (which is really long and drawn-out and exquisite in this particular novel). this book is so cool, omg. i love that feeling of epiphany, that you've been led to a point of the plot suddenly coalescing into making sense by an intelligent writer who's laid down innumerable threads you didn't even realise were threads at the time. at this point i would probably say that man'chi is the central theme of this book - bren's man'chi to tabini, and banichi's and jago's likewise, as well as their weird comradeship/friendship/semi-man'chi-ness? with him. ilisidi is still one of the greatest characters i've ever read, i think; i wanted to make an icon of her, but it turns out i had remembered the cover art to explorer as being cooler than it was.
