As far as I was aware, the 6th of December isn't any sort of holiday, but apparently it is because the stores are closed and no one told me they were going to be closed. As a result, I didn't get any of the vegetables I needed last night because I didn't make it to the store until 10 minutes before closing. I was supposed to have a whole Channukah meal today and I don't have all the ingredients for a single dish that I was planning to make.

ETA: There's one open in the Student Village, according to [livejournal.com profile] omega_h. Thank goodness!

I need:

  • tomatoes

  • onions

  • about 6 more potatoes, if I made as much as I was planning to

I could really, really use and was planning to buy:

  • carrots and a pepper or two, and feta cheese (this is a side dish that I can make do without)

  • brown sugar (this can be substituted but it's not the greatest idea in the world) and about 4-5 apples (for apple crumble, but I can always make berry pie if worst comes to worst)

  • yeast. I couldn't find the dry yeast despite spending like 3 minutes going over and over the aisle it should've been on last night and it was way too late to ask anyone who worked there.

Does anyone in town please have yeast, if not an onion and some tomatoes for the salad? (I mean, you can eat salad without tomatoes and onions, but it kind of sucks.) Or, preferably, know where I can go besides the gas station, which understandably does not carry any produce? UGH.

Our little Siwa is open. The one in the student village. And I'm sure that the store on the other side of the student village is open too. I have most of the stuff you need but you could probably get the faster from the store.

I have one single fresh onion in the fridge, and some garlic that may be past its sell-by-date now. Want to come and pick them up?

Don't worry about the food. I'm just excited about getting to celebrate my first Chanukah! :)

Well, it wouldn't be a very good celebration without some sort of meal aside from tabbouleh and pie. But I hear tell of a Siwa that is open... so I'm going to run there in search of yeast and produce. Thank you, though!

Just because no one's said it yet... Independence Day, dude.

If for some reason you're still missing something after the trip to Siwa, I'm pretty sure my tiniest corner store is open and usually carries everything on your list.

I got everything now though! Now I'm just staring in dismay at the bread. I can't believe Jews would eat anything that takes that much trouble to make. Wait, yes I can. But still.
