Daddy just sent me his sister's recipe for Bourbon balls, which I've never had before, and I was just wondering if anyone had made/had something quite similar, and could talk about how they would turn out/variations.

Bourbon balls

1 cup chopped pecans (2,4 dL)
¼ cup bourbon (my mom used rum) (0,6 dL)
1 pound powdered sugar
one half cup margarine, melted (mom used butter) (110 grams)
1 8- ounce package unsweetened chocolate (mom used one box of Baker's
unsweet one- ounce squares)
one tablespoon Crisco (mom used butter)

Soak pecans in bourbon three hours or overnight. Combine pecans,
sugar, and margarine. Shape into ¾" balls (I let it solidify a bit
and then used two spoons to shape them and put them on waxed paper),
Chill 30 minutes. Combine chocolate and Crisco in pan and melt over
medium heat stirring, so as not to stick (I melted over low heat.)
Using a toothpick, dip each ball into chocolate and place on waxed paper.

I've made rum balls, which have vanilla wafers in them, but they're similar. I love them!

Like wafers instead of, or in addition to nuts? Do you find they don't harden sufficiently?

Instead of the nuts. The only time I had a problem with the hardening was when I used too much rum. ::grin:: I also coat mine with powdered sugar instead of the chocolate and that helps soak up the moisture I find. I can send you my recipe as well, if you like.

Here you go, whether you want it or not. :)

Ingredients

* 2 tbsps. cocoa
* 1 c. powdered sugar
* 1/4 c. rum
* 2 tbsps. light corn syrup
* 2 1/2 c. vanilla wafers, crushed
* 1 c. chopped pecans
* powdered sugar

Sift together cocoa and powdered sugar. Combine and stir rum with light corn syrup. Add and mix vanilla wafers and chopped pecans.

Roll ingredients together into balls.

Dip each ball into powdered sugar, or put them in a plastic bag and shake them in the sugar.

Makes 25 rum balls.
