this is the episode which introduces the q.  they aren't named here, but in tng, later, we learn that the semi-omnipotent being encountered here is a baby q.  you can see echoes of the q scenes in "encounter at farpoint", too--the appearance on the bridge, the foppish manner, the judge's robes.

trelane has been watching earth across the galaxy, but because of the speed of light, he's been watching what happened in, like, the 1700s.  he doesn't realise this, because he's a baby!q, although they don't realise that yet.

TRELANE: well, i don't know if i like your tone. it's most challenging. is that what you're doing, challenging me?

SPOCK: i object to you. i object to intellect without discipline. i object to power without constructive purpose.

KIRK [thinking]: that's mah man!

when trelane thinks kirk might not cooperate, he immediately threatens spock.

TRELANE: it's my game and my rules! but if you need to be persuaded... [aims at SPOCK]

SPOCK, after about a tense second, can't resist looking sidewise at KIRK.

KIRK, tensely: all right!

SPOCK: captain...
KIRK shakes his head quickly at SPOCK, signalling him to be quiet.

in other screencap news the lack of filters and artificial lighting in sga makes it, well, not as nice as it could be for icons--not to mention that it makes it hard to find good iconning caps. i've found several caches that of very thorough caps, but that just means a lot of sorting through them looking for what you want; i may have to make them myself. and man, have i seen a lot of hideous icons for this fandom so far.

It's been years since I saw any TOS, but wow, I really enjoy seeing these screencaps when you post them. It's so great to see all these little moments from the classic show. Thank you for sharing them.
