cimorene: cartoony drawing of a woman's head in profile giving dubious side-eye (whatever)

"Ugly is the new beautiful!" trumpets this enraging msnbc headline. It's about an alternative model agency called Ugly which is supposed to supply "models who are not traditionally beautiful".

Look at the gallery - no seriously, look at all the pictures.

Okay. You know what I noticed about the gallery? I noticed that about half or a third of the male models are overweight, old or average looking. Meanwhile, aside from one little person and one curvy woman who strongly resembles Ugly Betty's America Ferrera, every single female model looks like... a model. One's slightly older and one's prematurely grey, but they're all tall, thin and willowy, possessed of what I would certainly call conventionally attractive faces, and pretty damned white. None of them would look out of place on television or in commercial advertisements. Most of them seem to be "unique" only by virtue of having tattoos, piercings, or gothy makeup.

What does it say that a message like According to agency founder Simon Rogers, "beauty really does come in all shapes and sizes" comes accompanied by an illustration that screams that he's lying?

RAGE!

I saw these pics a couple of weeks ago, and I noticed the same things you did. Lots of thin, white women versus a decent mix of male faces and shapes. So all I have to do to be "ugly" pretty is lose 30 pounds. What EV er.

Ugh. Just... ugh. And they're all so samey too. They don't even look that unique, let alone conventionally unattractive! I can think of more unusual supermodels.

The gallery, yeah, I totally agree. I watched the clip though and it was a little bit better- not great, but better.

Ugly apparently = mildly goofy in their world.
