Crunchy Aunt sent for the holidays, along with a really beautiful card with a photo of Tibetan prayer rugs, the following charming legend, with no explanation, on a slip of paper, as though her card had been actually a fortune cookie:
You, whose day it is,
Make it beautiful.
Get out your rainbow colors,
So it will be beautiful.
-the Nootka people
The Nootka people, Wikipedia informs us, are in actual fact the Nuu-chah-nulth indigenous inhabitants of the Pacific northwest Canadian coast, and the originators of the potlatch. So "Nootka" is probably somewhat politically incorrect, although it was chosen as a group handle for the several separate but related nations in 1979.
Anyway, my family's eccentricity... uh... continues. And "The Nootka people" shall be the first new household meme of 2009, to be used as the Default Attributee whenever something needs attributing. Just so y'all know.
