fannish business
29 Apr 2018 04:51 pm- Still mentally engaged primarily with Geiszler/Gottlieb Pacific Rim fanworks, as mentioned in this post. I've gone through all the fic on AO3 once - that is, all the headers - and am now going through in reverse chronological order again and reading things like tropes I don't like and ficlets that are too short to have any meat on them. Currently at 50 bookmarks... and unusually, I went back through and read every story I bookmarked twice to provide sufficiently informative notes that I would be able to tell which one was which in the future. (A few stories that don't have comments in the notes are ones I felt were adequately represented by their summaries.)
- I even watched the first movie - well, the non-action parts of it.
- We saw Infinity War. I assume there will be a larger-than-usual post-film uptick in MCU fic to read through soon.
- I was digging through all my DVDs, trying to find my special edition of Labyrinth, and dug up two boxsets of Hannibal still in the plastic wrap they were delivered in. We eventually remembered that we ordered them right after s3 came out when we were rewatching all three seasons for the second time, before s3 was released on DVD, which is why we don't have it. We were trying to show all of it to our friend Sofia, but we didn't quite make it all the way through, and then I found out my work friend Ella loves Hannibal and hasn't seen it, so we definitely have to get that and then rewatch all of them again.
- Did I mention how much we loved the new Tombraider movie with Alicia Vikander? It sounds incredible, but it didn't sexualize or objectify her EVER, for a moment. Not only that, but every single thing she wore in the movie was completely functional and practical and made sense for her to be wearing in-universe, even the sportsbras, even her hair, with the sole exception that nobody managed to stop the makeup department from giving her a very slim angled eyeliner line that was visible in closeup in scenes where she was otherwise correctly and realistically smeared with sweat, mud, etc, and would surely have lost it. Since we were shocked to learn the movie was directed by a man in light of point (a) up there, I have to assume that point (b) is due to male makeup blindness not being capable of reigning in the makeup department.
- We're also still all about Call Me By Your Name, but Wax isn't actively rewatching it any more times at the moment, since she finished transcribing and translating everything said in the blu-ray.1
- I only like to marathon shows, but since Wax isn't willing to wait, I've been watching Legion with her as it airs and it's amazing as expected. But because Fox has exclusive regional rights to it, and they have their own streaming channel, it's not on any other streaming services here, but their streaming service is both free and incredibly shitty quality. It won't work in any of our Linux setups and the app doesn't even work on Chromebooks, so we've been forced to watch it on the tablet.
1. I still can't believe she did this. And she didn't do it FOR anything, or do anything with it. she just sat there with headphones for like a week painstakingly transcribing every word and using google translate and guessing to figure out what they were saying every time they were speaking French or Italian. It was basically hilarious.
