Meanwhile waxjism has been reading a lot more It fanfic than I have and she informs me that there's a common misconception in the fandom that Beverly goes to live with her aunt in Portland... Oregon over the course of the story, evidently because they don't know about any other Portlands.

(Even onscreen it's pretty clear that she's going to Maine, because we see her go on a bus and it doesn't take like a week and a half, which a bus from Maine to Oregon... definitely would...)

I haven't even read It, but my immediate reaction was, 'But isn't this a Stephen King story? How would you ever imagine it's not Maine?' :D Dude has a rep that precedes him!

But if you don't know there's a Portland Maine, you'd have to deduce the existence of a nearby Portland and look it up! And apparently that just doesn't occur to you!

Apparently not! But I work my way there backwards: Stephen King is sending a character off to a city; ergo it must be a city in Maine. :D Whether or not I know the city name, I just assume it's in Maine if King is the one using it!

Evidently they don't know about Portland Maine, which is such a weird thought that it raises the possibility they also don't know that Maine is far away from Oregon...
