carnival & mayday
1 May 2021 12:47 pmLast night was Walpurga's Eve, one of the biggest seasonal carnival holidays in the Nordic countries - people wear funny hats and drink and party outside, eat fair food and buy balloons and streamers and the like, then get very drunk outside and barf in the gutters, you know, traditionally. And uh, even more traditionally, like back in the day, bonfires of course, but more outdoor drinking, probably still with funny hats. The marking of spring part went off without a hitch because we had nice weather - a bit chilly but that's standard!
The partying in the street part was obviously subdued this year, because of limitations on gatherings, plus the terrible health messaging means people don't understand the mechanisms of covid transmission (PRIMARILY AEROSOL! Very low danger outdoors! Very low fomite transmissions! Disinfecting surfaces doesn't do much of anything and neither do plexi shields on the face or the cash register! Standing six feet apart doesn't mean that you don't need a mask! Ventilation and air filtration is WAY more use, so yes, restaurant, you DO need to open the windows even if the room is large!).
We marked the occasion by baking a crumble-topped blueberry and redcurrant cake, which certainly LOOKS very festive (albeit more 4th of July), and by being startled out of the sofa at like midnight by a party of teenagers blasting music from their phones in the driveway next to our livingroom window because one of them collapsed on the ground. I was wondering if we were going to have to provide help or call for medical care, but the one on the ground turned out to just be barfing in the gutter and eventually managed to wobble upright on her own and drink a bottle of water handed to her by one of the others. Success!

There's not as many pictures of Tristana as I was maybe expecting to be taking, because she seems to be moving most of the time. She got her second vaccination on Thursday and weighed in at 1.43 kg again, so I think she hasn't really put on weight in the last week, just fluctuated a bit depending on whether she had just eaten or not. She was, however, pronounced in perfect health and incredibly smol but not in a worrisome manner.

Today is May Day, a flag day for the unions and a national holiday, and it's traditionally for picnics. Too cold for that, really, but it is pretty - we might go outside for a bit later. Workers unite, everybody! Fuck capitalism!
