Oh well...

Of the three hats we made for my dad, one of them was meant to be a beanie without a folded-up hem, and the other two were meant to have folded hems. But all of them came out too short to fold up!
I'm so used to following hat patterns that I guess I didn't think to check because I was in a hurry? Both the hats that came out wrong are from patterns that are supposed to be long enough; with the third one I've figured out where I misread the pattern and decreased too fast, but I really don't know what's up with the first one. Maybe I misread it too, but I didn't feel motivated enough to go check. Oh well. They're all long enough to comfortably cover the ears without a turned up hem, so hopefully they'll be useful to my dad anyway.
We lit our first fire of this year last night, after having our chimney checked out a week ago. It's been getting a little bit colder and two mornings in a row, it sort of drizzled a thin coating of snow over everything that looks like a layer of powdered sugar on a cake. I wonder if Finnish has a special word for that. Anyway, I forgot that last year I set some candleholders on top of the cast iron stove and they heated up and the candles liquified completely and the candle wax spilled out onto the top of the stove and sort of soaked in and so now it smells strongly of stearine when it heats up. Oops!
