did persephone have another reason for not wishing to be in love with hades, other than that it would have been more convenient that way? i was thinking out loud to [livejournal.com profile] ninglor this weekend (on the hampshire campus, after your interview i think?).

<--SO frustrated with herself!

Since the whole sleeping thing didn't pan out, I'll throw in my two cents. In the actual myth it seemed like she didn't want to be in love with him because a) he kidnapped her, b) she hated Hades the location, she was used to spring and green not death, c) she missed her mother... *frustration* I have no Latin books here! I can't remember if she was a virgin goddess or not, I think that might have had something to do with it.

The reading into the very archetypal<sp?!> greek reasoning is the fun part. What were they trying to say? Good girls don't like boys who kidnap them, parental obligation.

*ponders* There was also a hospitality theme in some of the versions I read. Hospitality was crucial to greek thought and culture and by refusing food she was being very insulting. I think that's one reading of the pomegranate bits.

I can probably dredge up more when I'm like... coherent.

Good luck :)

hospitality is an interesting angle, i think, but i'm also taking quite a bit of liberty with the myth. mixing up all the versions, then changing it so it makes even more sense and then putting it all in a grungy near-future... ^.^ well. the result should be interesting, ne.

Outside this room is a hallway of cement that won't scrub clean, stainless steel and old ceramic tile, a part of what used to be a "subway" ("metro," here) system. There's the occasional sign remaining--most of the living quarters are partially above ground, hollowed out of the foundations of the buildings that still tower in the dead cities over her head, and there's a partial directory to the warren of interconnected residences byond, Nick's doing, under a strident NORTHBOUND, white letters on green, with an arrow. A crumble-edged doorway in the side of a cement tunnel next to the signs, she has always thought, looks like a giant fist clenched in the cement when it was still wet. The doorway, like so much in their world above the ground and below it, is a relic of times before, the war itself or the history before it. She is sure Nick has tried to tell her about it before; she lets memories slip through her fingers like so much water and like so many other things.

It does work! Just not for AIM or the web or anything besides email and basic word-processing. :kicks it: But yeah, that's me-at-home. Me-at-work might possibly have AIM, except for the whole at-work thing compounded by the anybody-walking-by-can-see-what-I'm-doing thing. :kicks things again: If you're willing to have a strictly email-type chat fling, though, I'm at odiorne@mpi.com.

*pops knuckles, jumps into the fray* I never had this in a class, so this is all entirely based on my 6-year-old-kid-reading-Bullfinch's-Mythology memories of the subject, but here goes: I always thought of it as a take on mortality and identity. I mean yes, yes, the obvious seasonal-thing, blahdy-blah, but also that she didn't want to love him because of what he represented: death, decay, etc. It wasn't just that it wasn't what she knew; it was that it was against everything she was, everything she stood for. Like an ancient Greek bad-boy attraction, only angstier. As an extension of this, I also assumed she didn't want to be his bride because she would be fully conscious that that would make her his queen, as well: queen of the dead, queen of hell, etc. She hated what he could turn her into, what she would become if she allowed herself to love him.

Jebus, was that even coherent? *shakes head* Bed now for Katie. Bed.
