the last climactic scene is a little corny, but then, so is this icon. from roger ebert:
meanwhile cosimo jumps off the stage, snatches the orchestra conductor's baton, whispers to the first violin and strikes up 'my lucky star.' don sings it onstage, kathy comes into his arms, they finish it as an incredibly mushy duet.
"You are my Lucky Star"
music by Nacio Herb Brown; lyrics by Arthur Freed
(don)You are my lucky star.
I saw you from afar.
Two lovely eyes, at me
They were gleamin', beamin'.
(kathy)I was star-struck.
(don)You're all my lucky charms.
(kathy, crying)I'm lucky in your arms.
(don)You've opened heaven's portal
Here on Earth for this poor mortal.
(together)You are my lucky star.

Kathy flees down the aisle--but then, in one of the great romantic moments in the movies, she's held in foreground closeup while Lockwood, onstage, cries out, ``Ladies and gentlemen, stop that girl! That girl running up the aisle! That's the girl whose voice you heard and loved tonight! She's the real star of the picture--Kathy Selden!'' It's corny, but it's perfect.

Date: 13 Mar 2003 07:27 pm (UTC)Singin' in the Rain is the only movie i brought with me to college... even though i didn't have a tv. i adore everything about it. as a matter of fact, instead of responding immediately to your post, i ran all the way to the other end of the house and dug up the dvd that i got my dad for his birthday, tore the cellophane off (he won't mind..!) and watched the "You were meant for me" scene on the soundstage. sweetness shock. it's so perfect. still. yay!
