a military guy is holding kirk and sulu at gunpoint, having confiscated their stuff, when the communicator goes off.

'what was that?' says the dude.

kirk appears surprised and raises an eyebrow. 'what was what?'

it beeps again. 'what was that!'

sulu: 'i don't hear anything.'

again. 'there it was again!' says the hapless guy.

'emergency signal,' sulu mutters inexplicably, as if kirk doesn't know what the sound is.

back on the enterprise, mccoy, spock, and a bunch of others are in the transporter room. spock gives the order to beam the party up from the communicator signal.

mccoy says something like 'only one signal. what's wrong?'

'we'll know in a minute, doctor.'

they beam up the military man, still in a defensive crouch, holding the communicator and a gun. spock paces up to the transporter pad and raises an eyebrow at the man, who looks terrified. just then the communicator sounds.

'kirk to enterprise.'

'are you alright, captain?' says spock.

'yes, we're fine, spock. but, as you can see--' you can see he's suppressing the urge to sigh or something, speaking a little ponderously, 'we have another problem.'
