after marcini's. m fae glasgow writing under a pseudonym.

in which sherlock holmes proposes, as a direct metaphorical substitute for a wedding band, that he go for a couple of hours with a hard-on after sucking watson's dick. to prove his love. (watson, needless to say, is moved to tears by such a strong protestation).

...

wtf?

*and the really sad thing is that this is one of the better story concepts i have seen in the genre, and one of the more emotionally affecting stories. i mean, i'm really considering putting it on my recs page.

I wish there were more good H/W stories. I seem to have run out of decent reads, and I've been in the fandom less than a week.

well, i wouldn't call it 'good.' the entry constitutes fair warning.

the amazing thing is that they're both perfectly serious, apparently. although you'll notice watson isn't easily convinced, and later in the story, when holmes takes him to the secret gay club, worries that he might be just a convenient lay.

Oh hell yeah.

I hope that at least Faye enjoyed whatever she was huffing at the time. ^_^

i'd say it was pretty strong stuff except...

there's one i didn't consider rec'ing, where watson follows holmes to a secret gay sex club and watches him have roleplaying watson sex, which causes an out-of-body experience while he's jerking off. and then in the midst of a glowing shitload of religious imagery, at the last bit decides to be gay with holmes instead of leaving him forever. and god approves. something like 'his hand in mine and His hand was on both of us.'

only it didn't sound that dirty.

And I do think M. Fae is a good writer, but...

Writing a good Holmes & Watson pastiche? That's damn hard all by itself. What with the tone, and the vocabulary, and the historical details, and. Y'know. Not easy.

Writing a good Holmes/Watson love story? Count the fingers on my hand.

(Certainly I don't think I could do it, either. I did write pastiches back when I was completely in love with Holmes and didn't know slash existed, and they were uniformly awful.)

i've read some which i'd rank far above that one. admittedly, the genre has a fair amount of bad and not a lot of good, which is partly because it's small and partly because of the historical setting you mentioned. i admit i'm a harsh judge of fiction. i take points off for bad voice, and points off for unbelievable plot, and points off for bad characterization. i don't think people should write things they can't handle writing.

but i know that a lot of people write in literary fandoms, and a lot of people *are* good at it. and plenty of people who can't handle romance+literary pastiche write in non-literature-based fandoms and are very good at that. m fae's problem is not really a lack of the period voice; it's more being ridiculously overdramatic coupled with this bizarre sentimentality that warps both the male characters ooc.

my summary of the story above highlighs exactly what's wrong with it, in fact. calling that 'overdrama' is a bit of an understatement. it's simply BIZARRE.
