anytime you eat or drink in our house you run the risk of ingesting fluffy airborne tufts of feline fur, due to the efforts of orpheus and empress, a pair of adorable Mostly!MaineCoon!Kittehs who differ from the breed standard largely in that they're a bit smaller. <3 for the cuteness of the kittehs and the crotchety old bowling ball cat, moonbeam, who is 12 and really shaped more like a partly-deflated beach ball with toothpicks for legs.

but, ew.

Brushing the kittehs helps, I find. And keeping down on the fan-ness. Thomas (who is also Mostly!MaineCoon) leaves fur all over the place, but it does not tend to become airborne, for which I am duly grateful.

does it really help? cause you can spend an hour brushing orpheus and the fur is still coming off of him at the same speed. and then do the same the next day. the only thing that makes a lot of difference is if you go a REALLY long time WITHOUT brushing him--because then his own airborne fur has, like, landed on him in places, or the fur that has started to fall out and hasn't, quite, makes a halo around him, and bits will fly off when he jumps onto the freezer to eat or something.

The brushing helps to a limited extent -- clipping helps more (and in fact with Thomas is frequently required, because the poor thing's fur mats far too easily). The fan's the really big culprit, though. The more energetic the air movement, the more the fur gets caught up in it.

That description of Moonbeam is so true. *giggles* I think Empress would like a brushing...
