i promised a picture of the spider. i forgot that our yard is, almost literally, a jungle. it's hard to see Miss Spider properly against such a brilliantly green background.

counting legs, she's close to as large of the palm of my hand and has some yellow markings on the black, you can see. also, she's done something very fascinating with her (humongous) web--there are these zigzaggy places where the silk is so thick it's impossible to miss, really visible, and bright white, not at all transparent. i mean, short places like mends, sorta, where this thicker stuff zigzags back and forth across the web. fascinating. pretty.

I am afraid of spiders and fascinated. (Talk about conflicted.)

I think she is a Black and Yellow Argiope or a Garden spider. Very cool spider.
I'm not sure but, if your interested here is more info and pics.

Ack. So, when I scoff at people who are afraid of spiders, I conveniently forget that it's only in Finland that spiders never get bigger than a fingernail.

i don't like it when spiders have pointy legs. i can deal with little bebe spiders and gurtwhopping tarantulas, but middle sized spindly ones i just don't like. however i appreciate the aesthetic qualities of this spider and the web. *nods*

well, i was kinda nervous momentarily when i took the picture, but the spider took no notice of me even when i was very close to her. and someone else posted a link id'ing the species and she's totally harmless.
