mom and i had agreed to go to a used car sale early this morning. when i woke it was raining. mom was up at seven thirty; i asked whether she wanted me to get up then and she said she had planned to go to the house and do stuff and return later to get me up. the place, she said, would probably not open until ten anyway. i woke before nine and resumed making editorial remarks for my friend k'sal's long-awaited second story (which i had been interrupted in by her in the middle of the night previously. she kept the computer so long that i was unable to stay awake to finish). she arrived around nine.

mom: are you ready to go, or do you want to wait a while? it IS raining pretty hard.
me: i need a few minutes.

she became angry.

mom: well, i thought we were going to go. i have a lot of stuff to do today (which i hadn't known before). if you're not ready i can go home and start doing all that stuff and you can call me later and see if i have time.
me: so what you really meant was 'are you ready to go now? because if you're not ready right away i'm going to become annoyed and go do something else instead.'
mom: no! i have a lot of stuff! you said blahblahblah! i'll just come back LATER!
me: no, i'm ready. we can go [reluctantly as i had not yet reached the desired stopping point]
mom: YOU'RE STILL TYPING!
me: THIS IS IMPORTANT!
mom: (sneering) is it a job application?
me: no.
mom: (looks over my shoulder and sees what it is--a piece of fiction which i am editing.) (sarcastically) oh, i see. important. i'm going. (slams door.)
