i finally read transfigurations by resonant. it will be very highly recommended; i enjoyed it a whole hell of a lot, for a non-preferred pairing (not a draco fan. i like h/snape). i'm definitely a fan of resonant's. it's sort of like a punk cover of pop or, as i said, a classically orchestrated cover of a folk tune. bolero, perhaps. or the symphonic version of ani's 'both hands.' at any rate, while gorgeous, less than perfectly satisfying, becasue it's flavored like an original novel. the characters taste like OCs too.

i really appreciate your assessment of this story. i could never quite explain it to myself. i liked things about it that had nothing to do with the actual slash... i didn't feel like it was even so much about the h/d. and in that way, you're right, it wasn't entirely satisfying. i think it would have been more satisfying it i weren't expected it to be h/d, if it were just billed as a story about harry, which is more what it was, i think.

well, it was a story about harry but it was also h/d. it had that plot thread running right through the whole thing. the personal growth was the point, but you had draco watching, waiting, and sort of assisting, and when harry gets over his hangups they're able to live happily ever after. it had a lot of classic romance elements, i'd say. the problem is the draco character really had nothing to do with draco in canon. he was fanoner than fanon. and the harry character had connections to canon, but they went very tenuous somewhere in there.
