tornado damage

a large tornado hit today. highway 82 is closed off all through town and parts of 15th, the other main thoroughfare, where they intersect. apparently billboards, a cvs drivethrough, and an entire exxon station are gone. i couldn't see much when i was driving past. unfortunately all of that makes it really difficult to get around, and it took me an hour for what should have been a fifteen-minute expedition to get lillian from school.
there were powerlines torn all the way to the ground, some broken and lying in the street. traffic lights are out on hargrove,15th, university, and 82, i presume. they have policemen directing traffic, but with the two streets which go at right angles to each other and intersect at a key location are both difficult to get onto, well. fifteenth was actually open heading to the west, which didn't help me as i needed to go to the east.
and lillian imagines that somehow, girl scouts is still meeting because she wasn't told at school it was cancelled, because the troop leader's daughter didn't tell her. as lillian didn't know till i picked her up that driving about is nearly impossible i doubt laura did either. ::snortfle::
in karggo's manly yet gay and so on news, k'sal doesn't think i was too verbose, but does think i need to rewrite. i'm due a critique late tonight. damn these real life jobs!
i got the extended ttt this morning, not knowing we were under tornado watch. but we weren't able to watch it in all the excitement. instead i watched a tos episode ('the doomsday machine'--classic k/s angst there, with spock gazing adoringly at jim, jim yelling at decker to let him speak to spock ('what happened to spock?!'). plus shatner was at the low end of his series-long spectrum of bodyweights, looking very trim in the green wrap tunic).

Date: 18 Nov 2003 07:05 pm (UTC)I just hope the Exxon it took out wasn't the one by your house (intersection of Kicker & 15th) - it's like the only gas station in town with credit card swipes on the pumps! :P
Re: ooh, tornado!
Date: 18 Nov 2003 09:40 pm (UTC)the damage WAS very concentrated, but there was a period where little driving was possible because of mcfarland being closed and most of the lights on 15th street not working, not to mention the intersection of kicker and
