in support of gay marriage to the president.

Mr. President,

Your press release indicates you regard marriage a religious institution between a man and a woman. Both parts of the argument are patently false. Marriage is both a religious rite AND a civil, legal function to recognize the union of two people in a life partnership. Religious beliefs are personal, sanctified and precious and should be protected from the misguided interference of the government. The separation of church and state is one of the essential freedoms which has characterized our country since its beginning. The legal aspect of marriage, on the other hand, cannot on any grounds be denied to any two human beings in love who wish to formally and officially cement that bond for practical purposes such as death and hospital stays. Your statements are not only wrong, not only unjustifiable, not only offensive, but they continue to make our country an object of contempt for the rest of the civilized world--and with reason. The course you outline is not only morally wrong but un-Christian by any intelligent, not self-interested, interpretation of the Bible you seem so interested in only as a tool to serve your own narrow-minded, short-sighted and self-centered ends.

I hope whoever reads that gets a twitch. Heh. (Surely he has underlings catching all of his email.)

yeah, they come right out and say they do. but they tabulate the opinions, so if they get an overwhelming amount of feedback on the subject--not that i think they'd actually change their position, but they might consider it carefully. i don't want them to be allowed to feel that the populace is behind them, and i also don't want them to be able to feel that religion or morality is behind them.

I'm composing an email as we speak. Or attempting to, anyway. I tend to freeze up on official issues; I'm afraid I sound stupid or inarticulate. I wrote to a few local policital figures here in MA, though, yesterday and in weeks preceding.

good for you!

i was like, 'wait, i have to make a reasoned argument? ai!' then i resigned myself to just dashing off a few lines, and psyched myself up to do it that way. no insults, just strong statements of what i consider to be fact.
