cimorenei can practically feel myself growing spines. am annoyed! am EASILY annoyed! why, oh why, can this be? i prescribe a good dose of fiction writing immediately following a moderate application of homework.
i was reading discourse analysis in the linguistics text today--gender differences, mostly.
"[in] 11 two-person, cross-sex conversations recorded mainly in pulbic places: males accounted for some 96 percent of the interruptions. in same-sex conversations males also cut off males and females cut off females but in 20 recorded encounters, interruptions were equally distributed between the speakers."
when recording interactions between cohabiting couples (graduate students), "women asked more than 70 percent of the questions." [particularly "d'ya know what?", to begin a conversation.] why? "men tried 29 times and succeeded 28 times to start a conversation and keep it going. women tried 47 times, sometimes for as long as 5 minutes, with dead-end results 30 times."
"doctors out-interrupt their patients, male and female, by a two-to-one margin--except when the doctor is a woman. in that case, the situation is reversed, with patients--both male and female--out-interrupting by the same margin."
