title: and write that symphony
author: cimorene
rating: nc-17
fandom: singin in the rain--classic 1954 musical comedy romance--my favorite movie, and generally regarded as one of the best of all time.
pairing:  don/kathy/cosmo
summary:"I always knew there was something missing when we did that number, Cos," said Don. "Didn't you?"

Cosmo'd looked thoughtful and nodded. "Kathy, you're just gonna have to stick around."

Don had looked surprised. "Oh, don't worry about that," he'd said, "I'm keeping her."

COSMO: talking pictures--but that means i'm out of a job.  at last i can start suffering and write that symphony.
RF: you're not out of a job; i'm putting you in as head of the new music department.
COSMO: well, thanks, rf!  at last i can stop suffering and write that symphony!

Hi...I found your post while reading through my friendsfriends page and read your novella as I love Singin' in the Rain (it's my favorite classic movie of all time). Just wanted to say that I really enjoyed this and the way you delved into the relationship between Don, Kathy and Cosmo. The dialogue and the character voices rang very true, and I loved the interplay.

I'm not very sure if this is the right place to leave feedback, but hell, a comments a comment, right?

This was... wow. I wasn't sure about how much I'd enjoy reading a fic based around that film, but this was just... wonderful. You contrast these moments of absolute stillness with scattershot dialogue that feels completely in character.

It was interesting to see Cosmo through the filter of Kathy- he's a much quieter, frailer person than his brash exterior would seem to suggest, but it feels true, so true and believable. I've always maintained that all Cosmo needed was the love of a good woman...

I admire your boldness in leaping from one time frame to another. It's something that works and something that I would never have the courage to do. Rather than detracting from the build-up of tension, the flashbacks and memories serve to underscore the dynamic between these three people searching for a connection.

This is rambling and makes no sense.
But I wanted to let you know that I loved it, and am in awe of the fact that you undertook such a thing in the first place.

indeed, feedback is always welcome and cool and i'm quite glad to have this. i'm glad you liked the time frame stuff. that was part of the revision, and it was something that actually helped clean up and clarify the story and make it *more* flowing and connected, though not more linear, imo. :)
