i was really looking forward to going fabric shopping a lot, and we did it yesterday. our couch and chairs were in desperate need of covers.

but the day turned into a total bust as wax and i have fundamentally incompatible color tastes. i'm an interior design maniac: it HAS to be designed; and it has to be brightly colored. she threatened to burn them if i bought aqua curtains, expressed the opinion that jade was the worst abomination of a color ever invented, sneered at a dark appley chartreuse (my absolute favorite color), and said that fine, subtle patterns made her skin crawl, expressing a preference for bold 70s'style flowers.

meanwhile, i have nothing but contempt for decorating with neutral colors and the mousey chickenshit gray-filled colors which i call 'country colors,' and that is exactly what she likes. gray green, specifically, which to me looks like a dying plant.

in the end we had to decide on a brown couch cover, which i think i can hopefully even like, although what i wanted was a white-on-aqua or apple green cotton. and then she said we didn't need curtains, because we already have some. i looked a bit more, but was discouraged, and she had a headache and was trailing around sort of moaning and whimpering at the bolts of neon orange fur.

so we left with nothing, but i'm going to go back and get some curtains--maybe black and white, or maybe this one print with giant polka dots. nothing has as yet been done for the poor bedroom. that's the room where dark curtains are a necessity. we'll have to see what happens.

Maybe what you need is a completely white or better yet cream decorating theme and then a bunch of reversible throws and cushions and blankets with one side in dying plant and the other in chartreuse, and you can keep flip-flopping.

Or blue! everyone loves blue!

green'd be better, cause i like brilliant cobalt, and ultramarine, and aqua, and robin's egg, and electric; and she likes navy. preferably a dusky, as opposed to a cobalty, navy. and she doesn't like light blue at all. now, i like navy, particularly in combination with chartreuse. but i don't want ONLY navy, y'know? the only color we seem to like in common is a sort of pale medium-between-yellow-and-blue green that's a bit neutral but not gray. it tends to show up on cream linen, printed in the shape of leaves.

the cream thing is probably the best plan except we already have a red carpet. beige, or cream, or brown, with colored accents.

but i think she's okay with the polka dotted curtains i like. they're sort of dusty lilac and black and cream and some shade of green dots in a grid on a washed out blue ground, each one about a handspan in diameter. very modern.

It seems like we have quite the same tastes in interior decorating, only I prefer fuchsia and tile red to your aqua. But the 70's patterns, who can not love them?

i actually DO like bold flowers, especially marimekko. of course we can't afford that. and i didn't see any i wanted on a couch. flowered couches are too old-fashioned for me.

and i like fuschia and terracotta too, i just prefer blues and greens. and plus, wax can't STAND pinks, i knew that. i love aqua and lime, or aqua and chartreuse--the green is the main thing about it, i don't love aqua per se, it's just aqua is the perfect accent to it. but i've always wanted a red couch. (we can't do that cause our livingroom rug is red.)

Possible compromise: Now that you've got the brown couch, find some kick-ass discontinued upholstery samples and make brightish cushions. You can do it for about four bucks a cushion (stuffing included).
